2010 Scotland Students 8 Wales Students 50
Wales secured second place in the 2010 Student Home Nations Cup
Wales Students finished off the 2010 Home Nations in grand style with an emphatic and record 50-8 victory over a physical and aggressive Scottish team at Young Munster RFC last Friday. England won the title after beating Ireland 80-8.
The Scots enjoyed the early possession and territory but the Welsh defence held firm and from their first visit into the Scottish 20 metre area captain and centre Rhys Griffiths worked his way over in at the corner for stand off Mark Wool to convert superbly form the touchline.
Wales continued to be clinical in the face of some over aggressive Scottish tackling and further tries were soon added by wing Patrick Evans (2) and centre Dave Hampton.
The Scots hit back with a try but full back Kriss Wilkes broke clear to to score and quell any fears of a Scots comeback. Wool added a further three conversions to put Wales 28-4 up at half-time.
A brief Scottish rally soon ended when Rhys Griffiths scored his second try after good approach work from loose forward Owain Brown.
Winger Harry Mostyn touched down in the corner closely followed by Mark Wool.
Scotland then scored a consolation try before half back Josh Davies completed the Welsh scoring near the posts after a strong break by second row Mitch Quoi. Man of the match Wool converted three of the second half tries giving him a total of 18 points for the match.
Wales coach Clive Griffiths said: "Even though we were desperately disappointed to lose our crown, the lads responded superbly after the opening defeat and only a
mad twenty minutes in the England game cost us dearly.
"From the half way point in that game Wales scored a total of 18 tries and conceded just 3 and I am very proud of every one of them.
"We have blooded lots of new faces ~ 18 new caps in the 22 man squad and it augurs well for the build up to the 2012 World Cup."
