Cardiff Blue Dragons A opened their 2019 Welsh Premier League season with a hard-fought 28-20 win over Torfaen Tigers A at Glamorgan Wanderers on Saturday.

The Tigers, who lost last week at Rhondda Outlaws, took an early lead through an unconverted Martin Vaughan try.

Unconverted scores from Karlin Claridge and Duane Iles put Cardiff into an 8-4 lead, but Vaughan’s second try, converted by Lewis Handley put the visitors 10-8 up at the break.

Torfaen extended their advantage in the first set after half-time through an unconverted Craig Buffin try but their lead had gone within ten minutes.

Kane Harris and Claridge quickly went over for Cardiff, with Oscar Wong converting the second. Joshua Palmer followed suit in the 63rd minute, with Jack Dryden converting to give them a 10-point lead.

The drama continued with the game in the balance right up until the final minute. Vaughan completed his hat-trick for the Tigers with Handley converted to bring the score back to 24-20.

But Cardiff sealed the win with less than two minutes remaining when Wong went over for an unconverted try.
